Winnipeg – The Players Cup would like to congratulate Brock Mackenzie on winning the Times Colonist open on Sunday, June 6th.
After four days at the Uplands Golf Club in Victoria, Mackenzie stood atop the leaderboard with a -14 total, draining a 25-foot birdie foot to finish one shot better than Adam Hadwin and Aaron Goldberg.
Mackenzie, an Oregon native and a member of the Canadian Tour since 2005, has been patiently waiting for a Canadian Tour win. After a decorated US Amateur career that included an NCAA All-American honours at the University of Washington, a 2002 Pacific Coast Amateur Crown and a Walker Cup title, Mackenzie finally has his name etched on some Canadian Tour hardware.
“If we had played another hole, he probably would have tied it. I’m just glad I was able to dig down and finally pull one of these out,” said Mackenzie.
After finishing in the top ten four separate times during the 2009 season, the 28-year-old Mackenzie knew he was due for a victory. With the first place win he took home a well-earned $40,000.
“I guess if you put yourself in contention enough times, eventually it will happen.”
Brock Mackenzie, Adam Hadwin and Aaron Goldberg are just several of the many elite Canadian Tour players who will be making their way to Winnipeg to take part in this year’s Players Cup.
As a Canadian Tour flagship event, The Players Cup is the only professional event in Canada that grants an exemption for the winner to play in a PGA Tour event, The RBC Canadian Open. It also awards the second highest purse on the Canadian Tour and attracts the top PGA Tour prospects on the Canadian Tour. It will be taking place at Pine Ridge Golf Club in Winnipeg, Manitoba July 12th to 18th, 2010.
