Winnipeg – More companies have joined the roster of corporate sponsors for this year's edition of The Players Cup, Manitoba's premier professional golf event. The new additions – The Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, Foster’s Wine Estates Canada, Sleeman Breweries, mf.1, Avenue Four Communications, Wescan and Astral Media - join Manitoba Lotteries, Manitoba Liquor Marts, Manitoba Hydro and The Winnipeg Free Press in their support of what has now become the event with the second richest purse on the Canadian Tour.
“Thanks to the generous support of our sponsors we've been able to up the purse to $300,000 this year," says Rob McMillan, Executive Chairman of The Players Cup. "The larger purse, plus the fact that The Players Cup grants the winner an exemption to the PGA's RBC Canadian Open, ensures that this tournament remains a must play event for the best players on the Canadian Tour."
McMillan says that the larger purse is a "win-win" for the players and Manitoba golf fans, who will be treated to some of the best professional golf played in Canada this year. Last year's Players Cup champion, Graham DeLaet of Saskatchewan, is currently sitting in 96th in FedEx Cup Point standings, with his best finish coming at the Shell Houston Open (T-3). He has earned $468,925 to date.
"DeLaet's early success on the PGA tour is a testament to the quality of players that we have on the Canadian Tour," says McMillan. "The difference between a player on the Canadian Tour and the PGA Tour can be as little as one stroke a round."
The Players Cup takes place at Pine Ridge Golf Club in Winnipeg, Manitoba July 12th to 18th, 2010. To see the entire sponsor roster or find out how to join it, please visit www.theplayerscup.ca.
