Winnipeg – The 2010 Players Cup is finally here. With tournament play beginning on Thursday, July 15th, featuring 40 of the top 42 players on the Canadian Tour. “It’s the must-play event on the Canadian Tour,” says Rob McMillan, former Canadian Tour player and now Executive Chairman of The Players Cup. “With a $300,000 purse and a PGA Tour exemption for the RBC Canadian Open up for grabs, it’s a huge draw.”
Along with the top 40 players on the Tour, there will be a distinct Manitoba flavour to the event, as local players Adam Speirs, Matt Johnston, Ryan Horn, Tyler Mancini, Dean North & Shane Dick will try to win one for the hometown crowd.
“It’s always great to have the local guys out,” says McMillan, “it’s nice to see people you know out there doing what they do best.”
This year, The Players Cup is adding some great new features for the fans. Along with a 16th hole stadium seating area, there will be the Sleeman 19th hole and a concert Saturday night featuring Water & Wood, beginning at 7:45 PM.
As a Canadian Tour flagship event, The Players Cup is the only professional event in Canada that grants an exemption for the winner to play in a PGA Tour event, The RBC Canadian Open. It also awards the second highest purse on the Canadian Tour and attracts the top PGA Tour prospects on the Canadian Tour. It will be taking place at Pine Ridge Golf Club in Winnipeg, Manitoba July 12th to 18th, 2010.
Wilcox wins the Dakota Dunes Casino Open
The Players Cup would like to congratulate Will Wilcox on his victory at the Dakota Dunes Casino Open on Sunday, July 10th.
The Alabama native closed out his round Sunday with a 15-foot birdie on the 18th green to close out the tournament with a final score of 25 under, one shot better than Brady Stockton.
Although originally scheduled to play a minitour event in Texas, Wilcox has decided to stay in Canada and compete in the $300,000 purse Players Cup in Winnipeg this week.
“It’s a no-brainer,” said Wilcox. “My decision was all based on how I played today but now I don’t even have to think about it. That’s some serious money. I’m going to Winnipeg.”
